The European Union in action in the South

In an always volatile security and humanitarian context, the ambassadors of the European Union as well as those of Spain and France began, at the beginning of the week, a joint visit to the southern department of Haiti, scheduled until April 13, 2026. This field visit is intended to take stock of the progress of projects financed by the EU and its Member States in this region of the country.

“The European ambassadors will participate in the inauguration, by the Haitian authorities, of new infrastructure and in the launch of new projects in southern Haiti for the direct benefit of local communities.

A major project will notably be launched on Tuesday, April 7, for the implementation of integrated management of rainwater and river water in the city of Les Cayes in order to help protect the city from flooding. A budget of nearly 10 million euros is allocated for the works and supervision and is implemented by the Office of the National Authorizing Officer,” it said.

This project is part of the Urbayiti program, the EU’s urban initiative for Haiti, with a total budget of 56 million euros. “Another project focusing on water and sanitation is funded by the EU to the tune of 3 million euros and co-financed by AECID with 1 million euros. It is implemented under the direction of DINEPA, through two of its regional offices, OREPA West and OREPA South. The intervention areas are downtown Port-au-Prince as well as the cities of Jérémie and Les Cayes. An amount of 2 million euros will be invested in the greater South,” the statement specifies.

Maternal and child health: addressing a silent crisis

Beyond water infrastructure, European cooperation also tackles a health crisis that silently affects displaced populations. The TIMAMA ter project, funded by the French Development Agency (AFD) to the tune of 8 million euros.
