The End of the “Titanic” Myth

There is a persistent illusion at the top of Haitian society’s pyramid, a chimera that has long lulled the nights of Pétion-Ville, Kenscoff, and the inaccessible heights. It is the illusion of the “Titanic”: the arrogant belief that one can survive indefinitely, champagne in hand, in the first-class cabins, even while the ship’s hull is ripped open in third class and the water is rising.

This illusion is dead. Recent events have proven it to us with pedagogical brutality. Violence no longer has geographical boundaries. It no longer asks for a “pass” to rise to the heights. When Bel-Air, Solino, or downtown catch fire, the smoke blackens the walls of the most fortified villas, and the entire economy suffocates.

Today, as law enforcement, in a surge of dignity, attacks criminal strongholds in an attempt to save what remains of the Republic, a disturbing but unavoidable question arises: Where are the elites? And by “elites,” I do not mean only the industrial captains, but also the predatory political class that has led the State.

We must have the courage to say it without complacency: if this country is fractured, it is because it has been methodically broken. Broken by an economic elite that has too often practiced silent secession, refusing to invest in the common good. Broken by public authorities who have transformed the State into a personal feeding trough, leaving gangs to fill the regal void.

But the time for moral judgment is over, for the court is on fire. The time is for survival calculation. Reconquest operations are expensive. Social reconstruction (“The Build”) is even more expensive. The State, bloodless, plundered
