Following the decision by the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MCI) to set the official prices of petroleum products at 725 gourdes per gallon of gasoline, 850 gourdes for diesel, and 845 gourdes for kerosene, merchants in Les Cayes, for their part, proposed an increase.

Meeting at the Les Cayes prosecutor’s office with local authorities, including the government commissioner, the city hall, and the Haitian National Police (PNH), gas station managers explained that they could not comply with the prices set by the state due to the high costs associated with supply.

Government commissioner Pierre Wilner Dormevil indicated that this meeting aimed to prevent potential social tensions. “The merchants showed that they were running at a loss, particularly due to expenses related to transportation, informal payments, and insecurity,” he specified.
