Right-wing presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori hailed a first-round victory over the left-wing “enemy” on Monday, as initial counts and polls placed her in a strong position to advance to the second round.

However, she is far from the 50% needed to win outright in the first round. The race for second place, which would secure a spot in the runoff, is extremely close, with the ultraconservative Rafael Lopez Aliaga appearing to be in a strong position. “The results of the early count are a very positive sign for our country, because (…) the enemy is the left,” said Keiko Fujimori, 50, daughter of former autocratic president Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000).
