Identification cards in Haiti: citizens denounce illegal payments

Despite the launch of ‘Kat ou la’, testimonies mention questionable practices in the issuance of cards.

While the government announces the availability of 500,000 identification cards as part of the ‘Kat ou la’ project, several citizens denounce, on social media, practices considered irregular in the issuance process.

Following an article published by Juno7 on this initiative, numerous reactions have emerged, highlighting persistent difficulties in accessing the cards.

According to several testimonies, some users claim to have had to pay significant sums — between 5,000 and 7,500 gourdes — to individuals in order to speed up the issuance of their national identification card.

“The cards were available, but we were told that they were not. After payment, we received them quickly,” says an internet user.
