Donald Trump declared on Monday that he did not intend to apologize to Pope Leo XIV, whom he called “very weak,” following sharp criticism of the pontiff the previous day.

“Pope Leo made false statements. He was fiercely opposed to what I am doing regarding Iran, and we cannot accept a nuclear-armed Iran,” the US president said from the White House, referring to the pope’s calls for an end to the violence in the Iran-Iraq War.

Donald Trump also asserted that the pope “showed great weakness on crime and other things.”
