On March 3, 2026, the Ministry of Culture officially submitted the archives of Haiti’s oldest daily newspaper, Le Nouvelliste, for inscription to UNESCO.

The Ministry of Culture and Communication (MCC) announced on March 3, 2026, the official submission of the archives of the newspaper Le Nouvelliste for inscription on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register. This initiative is a joint effort by the MCC, the Permanent Delegation of Haiti to UNESCO, and the Haitian National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO, as part of the Haitian government’s efforts to preserve and promote its national documentary heritage.

Founded on May 1, 1898, Le Nouvelliste is the oldest Haitian daily newspaper still in operation and one of the oldest French-language newspapers in the Americas. With over 127 years of service to the nation, it constitutes a living record of the country’s political, economic, social, and cultural history. Its archives—historical print editions, photographic archives, thematic files, administrative documents, and contemporary digital archives—”represent a documentary heritage of outstanding universal value,” according to the ministerial press release.

Inclusion in the Memory of the World Register pursues several concrete objectives: ensuring the preservation and long-term digitization of the collection, strengthening its accessibility for researchers, students, and citizens, and “highlighting the fundamental role of an independent press in democratic development,” as the press release states. It also aims to permanently inscribe Haitian collective memory within the documentary heritage of global significance.
