China called on Thursday for respect for Lebanon’s “sovereignty and security” after deadly Israeli bombings the day before, which, according to Lebanese authorities, caused 182 deaths and 890 injuries.
“Lebanon’s sovereignty and security must not be violated, and the lives and property of civilians must be protected. China calls on the parties concerned to remain calm and restrained, and to work toward de-escalating the situation in the region,” said Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to the press. She did not specifically respond to a question about whether a ceasefire reached between Iran and the United States should be extended to Lebanon.
