Cuba accuses the United States of pressures against its program of doctors operating abroad

The Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodriguez, accused the United States on Thursday of putting pressure on countries in the region to terminate their medical cooperation agreements with Havana in order to “stifle” the island’s economy.

“The U.S. government persecutes, pressures, and extorts other governments to end the presence of Cuban Medical Brigades in various countries, under false pretenses,” Mr. Rodriguez said on X.

Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, and Guyana have just ended these agreements, some in place for 25 years, which allowed the deployment of Cuban doctors. According to official data, in 2025, around 24,000 Cuban doctors and other health professionals were working in 56 countries.
