A man standing barefoot on a grassy hillside extends his arms towards the sky, surrounded by lush green fields and mountains in the background, under a bright blue sky.

The lower Artibonite is back in the news. For the same facts: yet another massacre that the police could not prevent. This time, it is blamed on gang leader Luckson Elan and his Gran Gif men. They left Savien and took advantage of the night of March 28 to 29 to come and breathe hellfire on civilians in Jean-Denis and other localities in Petite-Rivière-de-l’Artibonite.

Like others — at least eight in 2025 — this massacre has an air of déjà vu. In the heart of the lakou, bodies riddled with bullets were found. Women and men lying in their blood in the dust near burned houses. The assassins, each time, claim responsibility for their actions, display their power, taunt the “adversary”: Ti Contempt, leader of the “Coalition”, an individual who also has massacres to his credit, in the name of self-defense. Mimicry is terrifying. The rivalry maintained by other tragedies.

After Luckson’s carnage — sanctioned for a long time
